Puppy Mill in West Virginia

28 08 2008

There was an article in today’s Post Gazette about 927 dachshunds taken from the Whispering Oaks Kennel in West Virginia (don’t you love these names?).  Here is an excerpt:

Some of the dachshunds found over the weekend in a puppy mill in Parkersburg, W.Va., may be headed for the Pittsburgh area today, but it could be several months before rescuers have them ready for new homes.

Representatives from Dachshund Rescue of North America, or DRNA, including volunteers from southwestern Pennsylvania, will be in Parkersburg this morning to assist with the rescue of the 927 dachshunds taken from the Whispering Oaks Kennel during a two-day operation.

The Humane Society of the US has a more complete account of the rescue:

Yesterday morning in Parkersburg, W.Va., a cycle of animal abuse that lasted nearly two decades was finally broken. Local authorities raided the Whispering Oaks Kennel and found one of the most prolific puppy mills in the state’s history.

By the end of the day nearly 1,000 neglected and abused dogs were freed from the horrendous industry that traps hundreds of thousands of dogs in a dismal cycle of suffering.
